Install Windows 7 with a USB flash drive

This guide assumes that there is no access to a DVD drive. It also assumes an MSDN subscription. If you do not have a subscription, but can get the win 7 iso, the process is the same. If you have the Win 7 DVD, skip the iso steps and copy the pertinent files from the DVD.

Requirements:
*USB Flash Drive (Minimum 3GB)

Prep:

-Download the Windows 7 Ultimate .iso file from MSDN  HERE

-Download Virtual Clone Drive HERE (to open the iso without burning)

Mount Windows 7 iso

To save the trouble of burning the iso, you can simply mount it on a virtual drive.

1. Install Virtual Clone Drive – This is my favorite utility for mounting iso files, but extracting the iso with WinRar should work as well

2. Right click on the downloaded iso file and select “Mount (Virtual Clone Drive)”

3. Now your iso image is virtually mounted as though it was a DVD in your computer

Formatting USB

1. Plug-in your USB flash drive to USB port and move all the contents from USB drive to a safe location on your system.

2. Open Command Prompt with admin rights. Use any of the below methods to open Command Prompt with admin rights.
*Type cmd in Start menu search box and hit Ctrl+ Shift+ Enter.
Or
*Go to Start menu > All programs > Accessories, right click on Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.

3. You need to know about the USB drive a little bit. Type in the following commands in the command prompt:
First type DISKPART and hit enter to see the below message.
clip_image001
Next type LIST DISK command and note down the Disk number (ex: Disk 1) of your USB flash drive. In the below screenshot my Flash Drive Disk no is Disk 1.

4. Next type all the below commands one by one. Here I assume that your disk drive no. is “Disk 1”.If you have Disk 2 as your USB flash drive then use Disk 2. Refer the above step to confirm it.
Below are the commands you need to type and execute one by one, hitting enter after each.
SELECT DISK 1
CLEAN
CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY
SELECT PARTITION 1
ACTIVE
FORMAT FS=NTFS
(Format process may take few seconds)
ASSIGN
EXIT
Don’t close the command prompt as we need to execute one more command at the next step. Just minimize it.

Bootable USB Drive

1. Check the drive letter of the mounted iso file. In this guide I will assume that your mount drive letter is “G” and USB drive letter is “H” (open my computer to see the correct lettering).

2. Maximize the minimized Command Prompt in the 4th step. Type the following command, hitting enter after each.
G:
(making sure you are in the root directory, which should read g:\>, type the following:)
CD BOOT
BOOTSECT.EXE /NT60 H:
Where “H” is your USB drive letter. Once you enter the above command you will see the below message.

3. Copy your Windows 7 DVD contents to the USB flash drive.

Your USB drive is ready to boot and install Windows 7. Install as normal, put in your cd key, and install all drivers as necessary after it boots into windows.
The only thing you need to change the boot order at the BIOS to USB from the HDD, just run the boot selection menu at startup.

You are done!

Crutches and Soap

I am sitting in Olin Library, catching up on emails and avoiding riding my bike back to North Campus. It sounds pretty nasty outside, so I guess I will stay here for a little bit. I am all done with classes, so I am in no hurry.

As I walked in to Olin, I got a chance to talk to Ed from CU Lift. He was my driver last year when I had only crutches to get around. The CU Lift program is a part of Student Disabilities Services on Campus that offers scheduled rides to anywhere on campus (and even off campus now and then if you know the drivers). It was real neat to see him because he became my main source of information about the campus. He would pick me up at 8:50am at Appel to go to my first class and I would end up asking him a question that he couldn't answer. By the next class time, he would pick me up with the unmistakable Red Runner van and the answer to my question. The process would repeat almost the whole day, until I didn't know what to ask. What an excellent department, that CU Lift is. I hope it doesn't get compromised in the upcoming restructuring, but I think its a safe bet that it will not be touched.

On another note, today is "Got Soap?" day. I am currently wearing a T-Shirt sponsored by Gannet, EH&S, and some other people, but I am having trouble reading the back at the morning and don't want weird looks. I also noticed a lot of sanitizing stations in the academic buildings today. I'm sure hope people start using those things. More importantly, they should use the soap handed out on Ho Plaza today, hand sanitizer only does so much...

Well that's about it for now, time to start the small trek back to North Campus and watch some Microsoft Training videos!

Weekly Update - Movie Night, T-Shirts, Vouchers, Calendar

Hey there Dickson Floor 2,

We just have a few announcements:

Movie Night with Root Beer Floats!
This Friday, September 11, we will be hosting our first floor 2 official movie night in the 2-5 lounge from 8pm to 10pm.. We will be using a projector to get the largest possible screen real estate. We will also provide popcorn. So make sure you come this friday and enjoy a film with the rest of the floor.
If you have any DVD's that you want to share, reply to this email and let me know. The current option is "I Love You Man."

Official Floor 2 Shirts
As we mentioned before, you should see Matt or Dan about a shirt. Traditionally, everyone on the floor gets a shirt to show off the floor pride, and we would like you to do the same this year.

The shirts for our floor will be orange and say "Dickson 2009-2010" baseball script style on the front, with "Bigger is Better" on the back. If you are ordering a shirt, we need your name, shirt size, room number, quantity ordered and $7/shirt in an envelope by 12 pm Noon on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12th. (this is a firm deadline) If you cannot find Matt or Dan, slip the envelope under one of our doors. Late orders cannot be accepted.

Lockout Vouchers-Last Call

Lockout vouchers must be picked up from Dan by 12 pm Noon on SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12th. This is your last chance, if you don't pick it up, you will not get one!

Remember, if you get locked out, you must go to Appel during normal hours (7pm-7am) because there is no RA on call. After hours, call the RA on call at 607-327-1015. Now that you have your vouchers, you can use them once, but after that, lockouts will cost $5.

Dinner Calendar
The 'Draw Yourself' board has been replaced with a calendar of September. The intent is that you can write what time you are going to dinner so that we can go as a floor more often. If there is a time already there, join them. Just write down the time and location and then gather before leaving. Matt and Dan will try to go to the dinners posted on that board. Feel Free to use it!

Potluck Dinner
On September 25, we will have a floor dinner in 2-5 lounge, potluck style. It will start at 6pm. Matt and Dan are still working out the details, but save the date!

Well that's all, folks! Also, never hesitate to ask us questions! Find us in our rooms or by email.

Thanks!

New Tech Blog Created

Hey guys,

I have created a new blog, separate from What The Dickns? to act as my technology blog. Below is a table outlining the differences. The new blog, Cornell MSP will be for all technical things, and will be for much more public types of posts. Anyone reading the new one shouldn't really care what my Residence Hall is up to this weekend, just the new specs on Windows 7, for example.

What The Dickns? Cornell Microsoft Student Partner
What? General Ramblings and Cornell Stuff Tech and MSP Business
Content Events at Cornell Product Testing/Reviews

I am officially a Microsoft Student Partner!

Well, I should really be doing my Economics homework, but I am too excited for that sort of stuff. All of my paperwork is cleared with Microsoft and now the fun can begin! So what is a Student Partner, you ask? Well, my friend, it is basically the student representative on campus for Microsoft. I will have the duty to promote Microsoft products and coordinate events on campus that support the company's products.

So What does this really mean?
From Wikipedia:
~~~~
The MSP program is an educational and promotional program to sponsor undergraduate and postgraduate students majoring in disciplines related to technology, typically computer science, computer information systems, and information technology. MSP program aims to enhance students' employability and increase students' awareness of Microsoft technologies. Student Partners are offered training especially in product-specific skills not typically taught in academia.
Microsoft offers compensation to the members of the Student Partners program through hourly wages and various software and hardware packages which are distributed to them for testing and promotional purposes. Student Partners are also given access to MSDN Premium Subscriptions to support their promotional activities. At times, Student Partners are invited to technology-related conferences.
~~~

But what does it really, really mean?
I can no longer participate in Microsoft sweepstakes, but I get a ton of SWAG anyway.

It seems funny, cause I signed up not to long ago to be a Campus Rep for Mozzilla Firefox, the famous Open Source Browser...
Even better, I went to the Students for Free Culture Club today, but I think that membership would be a conflict of interests...Its ok, I don't think I agree with everything they say anyway.

I will give more specifics later, but if you see me in Microsoft SWAG, this is why.
Look forward to chalkings of Bill Gates!

Scheduling at Cornell

For all of you Cornellians deprived of ENGR 1050, I would like to introduce you to APT student.

"APT is a program that helps students map a tentative academic plan for their four or more years at Cornell. It parses the Cornell Courses of Study to give you easy search, course data, median grade reports, and also has a facebook friends feature."

It is not a schedulizer substitute, because it plans out all 4 years, not each semester, but will make your life a lot easier!!

http://www.aptstudent.com

If you need help figuring out your schedule for this semester only, check out:

Schedulizer- This will give you schedule options based on the classes you are enrolled in. It is great for figuring out many alternative options.

Just Some Thoughts

Admiral Dennis Blair, Commander of US Pacific Forces
Remarks at Pacific Islands Conference of Leaders, January 31, 2001
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

On a recent trip to one of your beautiful islands..., I had the opportunity to take a break and go fishing, and overheard a conversation between a Harvard businessman on vacation, and one of the local fishermen. The fisherman had a small boat with several large yellow fish tuna....The business man complimented the man on the quality of his fish, and asked how long it took to catch them. The fisherman replied only a little while. The business man asked...why didn't he stay out longer and catch more fish? The fisherman said he had enough to support his family's immediate needs.

The businessman then asked, "But what do you do with the rest of your time?"
The fisherman said, "I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, take a nap with my wife, stroll into the village each evening where I drink a beer and play the ukulele with my friends. I have a full and wonderful life."

The business man scoffed, "I'm a Harvard MBA, and I could help you. You should spend more time fishing, and with the proceeds, you could buy a bigger boat. With the money from the bigger boat, you could buy several boats. Eventually, you'd own a fleet of fishing boats...You'd make millions of dollars!"
"But what then?" asked the fisherman.

The business man said, "Then you could retire - move to a small fishing village where you could sleep late... fish a little... play with your kids... take a nap with your wife...stroll down to the village in the evenings...where you could drink a beer... and play the ukulele with your friends!"

Volleyball Shirts, Vouchers, Floor Dinners

Hey there Dickson Floor 2,

We just have a few announcements:

Official Floor 2 Shirts
Dickson's annual Volleyball Tournament will be coming up soon, around late September. We will let you know the team details later, but right now we need a count for shirts. These shirts are basically the hall shirts for the year, and every floor has there own. We would suggest everyone getting one so we can show off our floor pride!

Lockout Vouchers
Dan passed out most of the lockout vouchers today. If you did not receive one, you must find him to get it.
Remember, if you get locked out, you must go to Appel during normal hours (7pm-7am) because there is no RA on call. After hours, call the RA on call at 607-327-1015. Now that you have your vouchers, you can use them once, but after that, lockouts will cost $5.

First Sunday of the Month Floor Dinner
We are sponsoring a monthly floor dinner every first Sunday at 7pm. We will be meeting in the 25 lounge at 6:45 and going to a different card swipe location each month. We would love you to join your RA's for dinner! If you can't meet early, meet us at the location. The list for the year is below:
  • September: RPCC
  • October: Risley Hall
  • November: Okenshields
  • December: Keeton House
  • February: Alice Cook House
  • March: 104West!
  • April: Becker House
  • May: Flora Rose House

Bulletin Boards
As an announcement, please be mindful of what you draw on the Draw Yourself! comic strip. We will have to take it down if obscene material appears on the poster. (even if it isn't someone from our floor)
On another note, please post anything that you find funny (within reason) on the LOL wall for all to enjoy.

Cornell Police - Wrong number Given
During the meeting, we gave you the wrong number for the CUPD. We gave you the number for Gannett, the health services, 607-255-5155. You should have that number in your phone, but use 607-255-1111 for the CUPD.

Well that's all, folks! Also, never hesitate to ask us questions! Find us in our rooms or by email.

Thanks!

Dan’s List of 5 Things You Can’t Miss During Orientation

  1. Campus Services Event – This will be held in Barton Hall from 8am to 5pm on Friday and is the premier place to learn about all of the activities and services Cornell has to offer. Go there after Registration and move in.
  2. Floor Meetings - There will be one Friday at 7pm and one on Saturday at 9pm. Not only are they mandatory, but they are also important to know how to live in Dickson. If you are on my floor, meet in the 5 side lounge.
  3. Dump and Run – Forget anything at home? Want furniture or anything else? Stop by Helen Newman Hall from 10am to 7pm on Saturday to get ‘dumped’ items from the end of last year. This is my personal favorite orientation event.
  4. The Sleep talk – Taught by renown sleep professor Dr. James Maas, this is an opportunity to learn exactly why you need to get 8hrs of sleep each night. It is Saturday in Bailey Hall at 3:45. Maas is incredibly engaging and the professor of Cornell’s most famous course, and the worlds’ largest class, Psych 101.
  5. Arch Sings – If you have ever seen Andy Bernard from the Office, you can probably guess that Acapella groups are an integral part of campus life at Cornell. We have about 13 registered groups on campus and they will be holding free concerts, or arch sings, at various times. You will have to check the schedule to know when and where, but they are certainly not to be missed.

Program Ideas?

I had a busy day today, learning about diversity and bias, getting corkboard materials, and learning about the rec department here. However, I did get to go bowling, which was pretty sweet. I needed 2 games to warm up, but finally found my sweet spot and got a 160 in game 3.

Last night I discovered the awesomeness of google docs forms. I put a simple one together in case any residents have a program idea. It may get more complex, but this is the simple version below. If you want to send this link to anyone else, here it is: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?formkey=dElHcDNoYUxfMEZZT3h5OHlJUEZPaUE6MA

Door Decs

I spent most of the night creating door decorations for the freshman rooms. The decorations for Floor 2 of Clara Dickson will be Cyanide and Happiness comics and names of each resident. I sure hope that they find it humorous, a fellow RA didn't get one of the jokes that was classic C & H humor. Here is the comic I have on my door, currently:

Free laundry and other excitement

Well, I am back at Cornell. I arrived yesterday after a night in Watkins Glenn. My room number is 2690 in Clara Dickson. This makes my address:

2690 Clara Dickson
Ithaca, NY 14853

I unpacked and realized how much space all of my stuff actually takes up... I brought a Futon, along with a bunch of end tables. Hopefully I can get a loft kit and free up some space. If I could get one I would also have an excellent movie watching atmosphere and could finally convert the futon to a bed.

Training for RA's has been really fun. Today the maintenance crew rolled a brand new Microfridge into my room, it is part of the new RA incentive package. In addition, laundry is completely free until the Frosh show up. You just can't beat that! If only I knew about the laundry when our home machine broke- we drove to NY with sopping clothes and had to lay them out the hotel in Watkins Glen.

Tonight I have to do some reading for RA homework and write letters to incoming Catholics. Until later, Cheers!

Behind the Laughter: The History of the Lion Angler Club

-Ever wondered where the Lion Angler Club came from? This was the script to a video I created for spanish class in High School. It basically explains all.

By Greg Castell and Dan Somrack

//~~~~~~~~
(start Behind the Laughter reel from Simpsons)
//~~~~~~~~
Narrator: Welcome, today we are exploring the Lion Angler Club. Sure we all know of it, but where did the hilarity really come from? For the next three hours we will be going behind the laughter.
**Future "will be going behind the laughter. "
**Present Progressive Tense "exploring the Lion angler Club",
//~~~~~~~~~~~1890~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Narrator:The Lion Angler Club started with a dream...for those wanting to catch big fish in a small pond (or was it small fish in a big pond?)
**Preterite Tense
Dan: (awakening from a dream) Aha, I think I shall be a traveling anvil salesman!
Greg: Or a fisherman!
Dan: Oh Yes! I think I will start a fishing club. I'll find some sticks, string, and head to the lake! Come with me! [Walks into water] Aha! A boat! A boat is what we need!
**Positive Command "Come with me"
**Future "I will start a fishing club."
//~~~~~~~~~~~1910~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
[Cuts into new scene, more modern, play the Entertainer]
Dan: How could I have lived without this? [Shows off rod & reel]
**Past Perfect "have lived"
Greg: I don't know, but the fish sure have been living without it
**Past Progressive "have been living"
Dan: Whoa! I think I got one! Here it comes...[Reels up boot] Oh goodness, it's a boot.
Greg: Don't even think about eating that...Throw it back!
**Negative and Positive commands
Dan:Well, I could, but I'd rather save it and hang it on my bedroom wall, like a trophy. After all, this is the first time I have caught something out here.
**Conditional Tense, Present Perfect "have caught"
Greg: Very true...Congratulations! I want to try...I will catch a fish someday too. Soon we'll both be professionals, and can pass on our knowledge to future anglers! [Fade out...]
**Future Tense "will catch"
//~~~~~~~~~~~1940~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Narrator: Unfortunately, the Lion Angler Club was devastated by World War II...However, a great innovation came about during this time that would revolutionize fishing in the '40's...
Greg: Behold the "F-Bomb", I was traveling in America when I saw it!
**Imperfect: "I was traveling"
**Preterite: "when I saw it"
Dan: Holy smokes! I have never seen something so innovative being used in the angling world! Give it to me! [Drops bomb, show mushroom cloud]
**Present Perfect "have never seen"
**IOP, DOP, together: "Give it to me!"
Greg: Wow, that's amazing! Look at all those fish! I have seen history in the making, this could lead the Lion Anglers into the record books. But do not tell anyone else about this secret weapon.
**Present Perfect "have seen", Negative Command "do not tell"
Dan: Incredible, it killed all those fish for us without any work! They sure didn't see that one coming. Hmmmm...I just realized something...
Greg: Why what's that?
Dan: The bomb contaminated them with radioactive waste, they won't be any good for us to eat. Care to try one for me?
**DOP "contaminated them", "one"
Greg: No thanks, I don't want to get radiation sickness. So much for the F-Bomb since it destroyed everything and contaminated the fish. What's next?
//~~~~~~~~~~~~
Cue 2nd Behind the laughter sequence
//~~~~~~~~~~~1960~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Narrator: In The 1960's, The Lion Anglers were keeping with the times
**past progressive: "were keeping with the times"
(show Dan, Greg, Dan's Dog smoking)
Greg: Aycarumba, everyone is doing it. (show fish smoking, greg spits it out, then points to new one) Bring me it!
**IOP, DOP, together: "Bring it to me!"
Dan: (dazed)
Greg: I was speaking to you!
**Progressive tense
Dan: I had heard you, tell him to do it! (points to fish)
**Past Perfect: "I had heard you,"
(both fall out of the boat)
//~~~~~~~~~~~2005~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Narrator: And so we are left with the modern-day Lion Anglers. Behold the men behind the myth - or are they?
[Show us doing something completely random like on a computer, eating, whatever...break into fishing discussion]
Greg: Whoa, hello there. You didn't think we were all about fishing did you? Because we're not, there's more to angling than just the fish. Training is important too!
Dan: That's right. I have been conditioning for the spring season for quite some time now [flexes] I could do this all day.
**Present Perfect: "have been conditioning"
**Conditional: "could do this"
Greg: And I am studying the best way to attract a trout [reading book] I was reading these books occasionally, but then I bought a lot of them.
**Present Progressive "I am studying"
**Imperfect: "I was reading"
**Preterite: "I bought a lot of them"
Narrator: Start Inspirational Music! (Chariots of Fire Theme) And so, ladies and gentleman, the Lion Angler club has shown excellence in all fields, whether they are fishing, cooking, eating, cleaning,(show parent doing work and us sleeping) clapping to music, or angling. (show with protractor)
**Positive command "Start Inspirational Music! "

Quick and Easy Optimize for Windows XP

This was a document I created for work, but will work with any Windows XP computer.
  1. Clean Internet Traces (5 minutes)
This operation will free up space by deleting temporary files from old web sessions. It may also delete annoying or malicious cookies.
    1. Open Internet Explorer.
Version 7:
Tools -> Delete Browsing History. The following window will appear:
Select “Delete all…” and then click Yes.
Version 6:
Tools -> Internet Options
ie6 options
Click Delete Cookies, and then Yes
Click Delete Files, then Yes
Click Clear history, then Yes
Select Apply, and then OK
  1. Run Disk Cleanup (20 minutes, or up to 2 hours if compression option chosen)
This will free up hard drive space.
    1. Open up My Computer
    2. Right Click on the C drive and select properties:
    3. Click Disk Cleanup:
      The following window will appear, and will take a few minutes to load completely:
      The next window will appear and allow you to select components to clean. Check the following boxes:
      1. Downloaded Program Files
      2. Temporary Internet Files
      3. Recycle Bin
      4. Temporary files
      5. Temporary Offline Files
If the computer is low on disk space, Compress old files may be selected, which can significantly free up space, but this operation may take up to an hour or two.
    1. The following window will appear and remain until complete. The computer may be used during this time. (but may be noticeably slower)
  1. Defragment the Hard Drive (1-2 hours)
This organizes and reorders the files on the hard drive for optimum speed.
    1. Open up My Computer
    2. Right Click on the C drive and select properties:
    1. Click the Tools tab, then select Defragment Now…
    1. The following window will appear for the Disk Defragmenter Utility. Select Drive C, and click Defragment. This application can also be accessed through the start menu with: Start->Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools. This operation will take between 1 and 2 hours, depending on the size of the drive. The computer can be used, but will be too slow to be productive during this time.
    1. The application works best if the % free space is greater than 15%. If, by this step, the free space is not at least 10%, contact IT to determine other ways to free up space on the machine.

Google Voice

I got a google Voice account the other day. Google Voice gives you one number for all your phones, voicemail as easy as email, and lots of cool calling features.

Ask for my number if you want it.

New Blog!

Hey there Ladies and Gentleman, Boys and Girls,

I now have a blog. With its power I can finally... uh.. blog stuff. More specifically, I will be posting reviews of new technology products, share events at Cornell, and sharing the locations of free stuff. All in all, I envision this site being the one stop shop for a thrifty Cornellian.

Keep watching, this may come in handy!
